Tecno’s Modular Concept Smartphone

At MWC 2026, Tecno showcased one of the most ambitious hardware concepts in recent years: a modular smartphone that strips the device down to its bare essentials to allow for total user customization. At only 4.9mm thin, the base unit is an ultrathin slab that serves as a foundation for a wide array of snap-on components. While modular phones have a rocky history, with projects like Google’s Ara and the LG G5 failing to gain mainstream traction. Tecno’s approach at this year’s Mobile World Congress is remarkably functional and diverse.

The Modular Ecosystem

The core of the system relies on four low-profile pogo-pin connectors and magnetic attachments. Data and power transmission between the base phone and its modules are handled through a mix of physical pins, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and even mmWave technology.

1. Camera Modules

  • Giant Telephoto: A massive lens housing that provides up to 20x zoom and features a manual focus barrel.
  • Periscope & Ultrawide: More streamlined options for those who want professional-grade photography without the bulk of the primary telephoto.
  • Standalone Action Cam: A module that can be used while attached or detached via Wi-Fi.

2. Power & Utility

  • Stackable Batteries: Because the base unit is so thin, its internal battery is small. However, users can stack 3,000mAh battery packs on top of each other, topping out at a massive 10,000mAh capacity.
  • No Ports: Interestingly, the phone lacks a traditional USB-C port. Charging is handled by a dedicated charging module that snaps onto the pogo-pins.
  • Communication: One module features a fold-out antenna, transforming the device into a walkie-talkie messenger that functions without cellular or Wi-Fi service.

3. Physical Add-ons

  • Lanyard connectors, grip clips, and a rumored (though not displayed) game controller mod round out the physical customization options.

The Practical Challenges

Despite the “thrilling” nature of the concept, several hurdles remain before such a device could hit the consumer market:

  • Rigidity: Concerns exist regarding whether the magnetic connections are strong enough to withstand being pulled in and out of pockets repeatedly.
  • Portability: To get the most out of the system, a user might need to carry a specialized case just for their various modules.
  • Efficiency: Modular designs often lose the space and power efficiencies found in unified, “all-in-one” flagship smartphones.

Availability and Future Outlook

Tecno is known for showcasing high-concept devices at trade shows that don’t always see a commercial release. Furthermore, Tecno currently has a limited presence in Western Europe and the US, though industry shifts suggest they may be looking to expand their global footprint in the coming year.

Mobile World Congress 2026 continues in Barcelona through March 5th.
